Boby Ari Setiawan was born on 18 January 1983 in Klaten city, Central Java, Indonesia.

With background of art, especially traditional Javanese dance tradition. He finishes college at the Art Institute of Indonesia (ISI), Solo / Surakarta in 2008 and studied the field of contemporary dance choreography.

 

He has worked with several dance companies in Indonesia and overseas dance companies. In 2009 he began to collaborate and work with Leine Roebana Dance Company / Amsterdam till 2018.

Boby Ari Setiawan is a choreographer, dancer, also a leader in Independent Expression (IE) dance company, and one of the contemporary dance company that is productive in creating works of contemporary dance. Create and share the art of traditional java dance in a fresh new way which raised about traditional art through the work of contemporary dance.

In 2014 he began working as a dancer with artistic director Peter Chin to prepare for his latest work "WOVEN" in Toronto 2015.

 

In 2015, the cooperation of the Yayasan Kelola and American Dance Festival assisted also by the First State Investment Indonesia provides an opportunity for him to follow the American Dance Festival program as an international choreographer of an Indonesian representative in North Caroline, Durham. 

 

As a dancer he worked with Leine Roebana Dance Company, with the title of the piece "Light", on Mei 2016 in Amsterdam.

 

From November 2017 until March 2018 he joined with the dancers from Tabula Rasa along side with the Belgium choreographer, Isabelle Beernaert who has more than 50 successful performances around Belgium and Netherland.

 

October 2018, he performs as a solo whip dancer in Para Games Opening Ceremony in Gelora Bung Karno Jakarta.

 

March 2019 he is invited as an artist choreographer to perform "Kurung Saji" in "Dance in Asia" ( Teater Arena Taman Budaya Jawa Tengah). August 5, he is invited by International Mask Festival (IMF) and Asia Tri Festival on September 25 to perform I'm Ayam.

September 2020 he has been invited by SIPA ( Solo Internationl Performance Art ), also 2021 he going to Kaba Festival " in Padang  and  perform  "Likat".

In 2020-2021 he has intense work with Century Contemporary Dance Company from Taiwan for the Dance in Asia project in August 2021.

in 2022 still busy with online dance class, and online dance collaboration project.
